5 Great Tips on Maintaining Your Hair Extensions

5 Great Tips on Maintaining Your Hair Extensions

The moment you have your hair extensions attached, clipped in, glued or sewn-in you feel like a red carpet diva and you’d want that feeling to last forever. However, extensions require some serious TLC if you want them to look spectacular for a long time.  Just follow these tips and learn what to do (and what to refrain from doing) to maintain gorgeous faux strands.

1.      Style your hair extensions carefully

If you have human hair extensions feel free to style them any way your heart desires. You can iron, curl, and even color them: they will respond well to styling, as long as you don’t overdo it. Protecting them from excessive heat is paramount, so remember to always spray a good heat protectant on your hair before each styling session. Try not to use the styling tools at the highest setting because too much heat will damage the extensions. Style with care and your extensions will shine back at you!

2.      Protect your hair extensions at night

Another golden rule is to never go to bed with wet hair, so make sure it is dry before you say good night. To prevent friction, frizz and tangling, you can either braid your hair, or cover it with a silk scarf (the classy Jackie O. used this trick every night). Oh, and if you could replace your regular pillow case with a satin one, your strands will thank you even more.

3.      Use good hair products

Look for sulphate-free shampoos to gently wash your hair extensions, and use a good amount of conditioner to soften them. To extend their life, try not to wash them more than once or twice a week, as shampoo tends to dry them out.

4.      Improve your brushing technique

Brushing and detangling your hair extensions is important, but you need to follow a couple of rules here as well. Brush them using a looper brush or a wide tooth comb, with a slow, downward motion. Also make sure you don’t brush them while wet, as they will get greatly damaged. You’ve got it by now: never mess with a wet mane!

5.      Treat extensions like your own hair

Remember to be kind to your extensions. They are delicate and vulnerable, so treat them as they were your own hair and they will look luscious for a long time. While compliments keep pouring, of course.

Healthy Hair Care with a Weave Extensions

Hello Remy Girls,

I wanted to share this tip of the week for healthy hair care with a weave extension for all of you lovely ladies. Many times we are consumed with our daily lives and think because we are wearing hair weave/hair extensions that thats it...no maintanance. I want to share with you tips on keeping your hair healthy and damage free so I have a few precautions to share that will ensure healthy hair.

Use a professional to do your touch ups on your hair. Your stylist placed small braids, bonding glue, and heat infusions and any of these methods has the potential to damage your precious locks of hair if not pampered by a licensed cosmetologist.

Choose grade A-AAA hair that will minimize trips to the salon. Remy Girls provides the highest quality of hair for our clients. We also offer synthetic hair and it is very cost-effective however, they require more maintenance. If you have damage prone hair ladies we highly recommend you use human hair extensions.

Remy Girls recommends that you wash your hair on a weekly or bi-weekly basis that way your hair doesn't become dry and brittle without moisture. Washing your hair often helps to prevent bacteria from attacking your natural hair and scalp. Also, a little virgin olive oil on the scalp helps to keep it moist and hydrated. Place a small amount on the tip of your finger and massage your scalp. This is most helpful for those weeks off from the salon.

After six weeks its best to take the weave extensions out for proper care of your own natural hair. Have the stylist trim your ends and get a hot oil treatment to preserve moisture in your hair. If you see signs of breakage to your natural hair Remy Girls suggest that you take a break from your extensions for a week or two. Hair needs time to recover harsh styling or over styling.
We hope you find these tips helpful, and hope to hear from you as well.
